2016 Don't Give Up Pep Talk

flying.JPGI keep hearing people speak about the classes at the gym where I teach. “They’re too full,” as if these “extra” new year’s resolutions should not be here. If you’re that extra person, let me put on my coaching hat right now and say: “DO NOT GIVE UP!” It will get easier, just give it a chance. Slow your fight/flight response down by closing your eyes, slowing and deepening your breath. Breathe and give it a chance.

I know, the reality is that new year’s resolutions do die hard, and they take many of us along for the ride. Research shows that by the third week of the new year, most of us are headed for the door, and throwing that resolution in the garbage on our way out.

The trick is that as we set these high standards for change, we must focus not on the big picture, but the little steps along the way. We must focus on the things that are going to help us stay consistent, not remind us of how far we have to go. Remember, we have to firm our intention with the little steps and then practice the intention consistently.

So, Let’s Go! Let the fact that people are betting on your dropout empower you to take your rightful spot. Turn inside to find the truth of your strength and shine your light, no matter what is being said. You are the light of the world; a town built on a hill cannot be hidden. (Matthew 5:14). If you fall of your mat or the elliptical, get back up and begin your work again. We all start anew each day. Set your intention with knowledge of your smaller steps. If you haven’t done that part yet, do it now. Here are some ideas to get you started.

You are not “extra”! There are no reserved spots in the heading-towards-feeling-better line. You are not taking anything from anyone by being here. Practice to gain consistency within your practice. Then you will own it! It will be yours! And it will be easier. Not every day, mind you, but most days, it will be easier. You’ll see the difference.

No matter what anyone says so that they can stretch out fully on two perpendicular mats, you are in control of your destiny. And you do not have move out of anyone’s way but your own. You are special, necessary, awesome! DON’T GIVE UP! Keep going!

Sat Nam.
